The Biography

Harry James Potter was born to Lily and James Potter on July 31st, 1980. On October 31, 1981, his parents were killed by Lord Voldemort. James died first while urging Lily to “take Harry and run!” Lily, wandless, ran to Harry’s room, where she sacrificed herself rather than stand aside and watch her son die. Her sacrifice gave Harry a protection, not completely understood by him until the age of 17, which made Lord Voldemort’s killing curse rebound off of Harry and back onto Lord Voldemort.

Harry was raised by his mother’s sister and her husband, alongside his spoiled cousin, Dudley who had everything Harry did not. On his eleventh birthday, Rubeus Hagrid told Harry (in a rather spectacular fashion) that Harry was a wizard and shall attend Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

It was at this school that Harry was sorted into Gryffindor House, whose characteristic trait is bravery, by the Sorting Hat. The most significant part of this event is that Harry chose to be sorted into Gryffindor over Slytherin, despite the hat’s initial response to place him there. The theme of choice would become a very important part of Harry’s journey.

Over Harry’s six years at Hogwart’s (he did not attend his seventh year), he faced and overcame many challenges. Harry almost always overcame these challenges through his ability to love. From Lily’s protection blistering the skin of Professor Quirrel who was possessed by Lord Voldemort to his choice to let Sirius Black state his case rather than kill him on the spot for betraying his parents (or so he thought) to his sacrifice of his own life in the final book.

His life there was not scary all the time. Harry would never had made it past his first year had it not been for his two best friends, Ron and Hermione. Over the years, they became more than friends to him: they became family in a figurative and literal manner. He thought of them as brother and sister.

The very first chapter of the first book is called “The Boy Who Lived.” As Harry grew up and began to accept his destiny and the wizarding world began to suspect it, he was deemed “The Chosen One.” Whether that means he was chosen by Fate or by Lord Voldermort or by himself or by all three, is up to interpretation. But no one can deny that choices shaped Harry’s story greatly.

Harry grew up to head the Auror Department in the Ministry for Magic. He married Ginny Weasley, Ron’s sister, and they had three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna.
